Sound off on the important issues at
Knowles has integrity and compassion
Last month, I was traveling back from Anchorage to Juneau. The majority of the flight was filled with Alaska National Guard troops leaving for Iraq. Former Gov. Tony Knowles was also on the flight and talking with many of the soldiers as we waited for the airplane.
Living in Juneau, I have seen Tony running his dog on the trails and being very approachable and accessible to the general public. I was impressed by the time he was taking to talk with the soldiers. Many of them were very young, some of whom, I was saddened to think, would tragically not return from Iraq.
During the flight, I noticed Tony go up to the main flight attendant to give her a written note. Later when she read it to the plane, I realized he had written a thank-you and acknowledgment for the soldiers on the plane. He did not mention his name or get any recognition for the wonderful speech the flight attendant read to the passengers on the plane. It was clear that Tony genuinely wanted to do whatever he could to make the soldiers feel special on the plane and acknowledge their personal sacrifice in leaving their families and going to Iraq.
We need a governor who demonstrates this kind of integrity and compassion, and who is accountable to the people of Alaska.
