Ungulate season opens for moose, deer

JUNEAU - The 2009 hunting season opens for a variety of ungulates, or hoofed mammals, this September.

For all deer, does and bucks the season opens Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Ryan Scott, Juneau Area Management Biologist with the Department of Fish & Game, says this year may be a tough one for hunters in search of deer.

"We're seeing some indications that the past few seasons have been pretty tough on those populations," he said. "In 2006 and 2007 the herds took a big hit."

Scott said deep snows and low temperatures are likely to blame.

"It's going to take a while, we're still rebuilding, numbers are a bit depressed still," he said. "It's probably going to be a slow year for deer."

The season for moose also opens on Sept. 15. And Scott said the "moosey areas" are the Taku River, Chilkat Peninsula, Gustavus areas proper and the St. James Bay area. Berners Bay is not open to moose hunting this year.

The season for goat is currently open, but check the Alaska Fish & Game regulations for specifics by calling 465-4190 or visiting their Web site at http://www.adfg.state.ak.us/.
