Goodbye to an old dock

Posted: Sunday, September 12, 2010

Recently, Pier 48 on the Seattle waterfront, where the ferry docked, has been getting demolished.

For years when I lived in Juneau, I often took the Alaska Marine Highway to and from Seattle. This was in the 1980s, before cruise ships became so popular, and before the southern terminus moved to Bellingham. I and many others will always remember taking the few day journey from Southeast, entering Elliot Bay in the early morning and having Seattle light up before us. I'll remember the return trips back to Juneau, too - hauling aboard bags of groceries, pulling away from the dock, looking back at Seattle for another year and sailing to Alaska.
