KOTZEBUE - A $150,000 donation from Teck, the operator of the Red Dog mine, is aimed at cutting suicide rates in the Northwest Arctic.
The Arctic Sounder reports that the money is going to the Youth Leaders program in Kotzebue. The program trains young people to act as a resource for their peers, and its grant funding was set to run out this year.
Teck also gave $75,000 to reopen the Boys and Girls Club in Kivalina and to improve attendance at a school there, and another $75,000 for a youth center in Noatak.
