State troopers called off the search for the cruise-ship passenger reported missing on Mount Roberts by his wife Monday.
Mitsuo Okazaki, a 79-year-old Radiance of the Seas passenger, had gone to the top of the Mount Roberts Tramway, but wandered off, search officials said. George Reifenstein, manager of the tram, said Wednesday there was a 50/50 chance Okazaki took the tram back to town. Okazaki suffers from Alzheimer's disease.
Juneau Mountain Rescue, Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search and tram personnel began searching Monday evening, continued all day Tuesday, and searched from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday without finding any trace of the man, said Greg Wilkinson, trooper spokesman.
Police are handling his disappearance as a missing person case, Wilkinson said. Okazaki is 5-foot-7-inches, 145 pounds, and was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue jacket with gold trim. Anyone who has information should call police at 586-0600.
