For no better reason

Paul Berg, in his letter to the editor of Sept. 8 (Crossing to Fran) begins with: "As a lifelong Republican..."

After citing the deep philosophical reasons for making the deep personal sacrifice of supporting Fran over Frank - such as Fran "enjoys meeting people" - Mr. Berg concludes his letter with: "I have been a Republican for over 40 years."

I was puzzled that someone with "a strong commitment to supporting party candidates" would decide to vote against his party's popular nominee for no better reason than Fran "has excellent interpersonal communication skills."
