Friday, Sept. 16

• Juneau-Douglas High School football - The Crimson Bears host the Colony Knights in a Railbelt Conference game. The varsity game starts at 8 p.m. and the junior varsity teams play at 5 p.m. at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. The Crimson Bears can clinch at least a tie for the league championship with a victory.

Friday-Sunday, Sept. 16-18

• Juneau Tennis Association and JRC/The Alaska Club - Back-to-School Tennis Tournament: The fee is $10 per event and entry closes on Thursday, Sept. 15. There are events for singles and 7.0 doubles for men's women's and mixed divisions. Info: JRC/The Alaska Club, 789-2181.

Saturday, Sept. 17

• Juneau Freewheelers bicycle club - Dredge Lake Mountain Bike Race: Meet at time TBA at the Dredge Lake Trailhead off Mendenhall Loop Road. Race time and course is TBA. Info: Glacier Cycles, 789-7050.

Friday, Sept. 23

Saturday, Sept. 24

• Southeast Road Runners club - Action Rehab 10K and 1-miler: Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Auke Recreation Area large picnic shelter for a 10 a.m. race start. • Juneau-Douglas Ice Association - Discover Hockey night: The JDIA and the Treadwell Arena are hosting a "Discover Hockey" night Thursday, Sept. 15 for children ages 5-to-18. It's intented for children who have never played hockey and are curious to see what's it all about. This is a free event and all equipment will be provided. The sessoin for kids 5-to-12 will take place from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. while the session for children ages 13-to-18 will take place from 8:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Please come 30 minutes early to suit up. • Women's indoor soccer league - The CCSL will be sponsoring the women's indoor classic soccer league starting Oct. 3. The league is open to women of all skill levels and ages. Teams play one game per week on Monday nights at Mt. Jumbo gym. • Juneau Billiard Association 8-ball League - The Juneau Billiard Association's 8-ball league is starting soon. The JBA is looking for pool players of all skill levels. Players can register beginning at 7 p.m. on Sept. 15 at either the Viking Lounge or Marlintini's Lounge. A second registration will be held Sept. 22 at the same time and locations. The 8-ball league will begin play on Oct. 6. Info:

• Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation volleyball referees needed - Volleyball officials are needed for the 2005 men's and women's fall seasons. League play begins Sept. 6. Officials are paid $9.36 per match. Info: Juneau Parks and Rec, 586-5226.



• Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver takes place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays starting Sept. 6 and going through April 28. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee or punchcards for $10 or $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th St. in Douglas. • Treadwell Arena schedule - The Treadwell Arena opened up with ice on Sept. 6. People can sign up for hockey leagues, classes, camps and skating lessons for the fall season. Treadwell Arena can rent private ice to the public from noon to 6 p.m. Info: Treadwell Arena, 586-0410, or on the Web at

• Juneau Women's Golf League - The Juneau Women's Golf League is looking for experience and new players interested in playing golf. The league meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday at the Mendenhall Golf Course. There will be a shotgun start. Golf club rentals are available and cost is $9.45 per round, plus tax. • Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Evening masters swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly evening masters swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Participants must be able to swim crawlstroke and backstroke. Info: Augustus Brown swim pool, 586-5325.

• Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.

• Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
