Juneau police, fire officials and state troopers reported:
A few minutes after 8 a.m. Wednesday, a girl, 12, was placed under citizen's arrest for concealment of merchandise at a business on Mendenhall Mall Road. She was transported to the Juneau Police Department, processed and released to a parent.
About 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Capital City Fire & Rescue received a report of an electrical pole on fire in the 4000 block of North Douglas Highway. Police and AEL&P responded. Apparently, a bird was eating something on a piece of foil, and that foil fell and hit the center conductor of the cross arm. The foil made a connection from the power line to the wooden cross arm, and created a high-resistive short to ground. Basically, the tar-impregnated pole became a matchstick, and flames shot from its top. That is not an unusual scenario, said Peter Bibb, vice president of consumer affairs for AEL&P.
At 5:18 p.m. Wednesday, Capital City Fire & Rescue responded to a report of a trash fire at Costco. The fire was extinguished prior to arrival of firefighters.
About 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, police received a report of a bear wandering in the area of El Camino Street.
