Open Gyms

Hunter Safety Course: The Territorial Sportsmen, 4-H, Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the Alaska State Troopers offer the Alaska Hunter Education Course. Class covers firearms safety, outdoor survival, conservation, ethics and law. Required for anyone under 16 to hunt on the Mendenhall wetlands. Graduates earn hunter education certificate recognized throughout North America. Class begins 5:45 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15; continues Saturday from 9 a.m-3 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Info: 465-4267.

Soccer coaching classes: The Juneau Soccer Club is sponsoring "E" and "D" level coaching classes beginning Sept. 18. Courses are part of U.S. Soccer Federation's coaching curriculum. State E license course runs Sept. 18, 20 and 22 from 6-8 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School and Sept. 23 from 9-5 p.m. at Melvin Park. Cost is $70 per person. Midnight Suns Fastpitch Softball tryouts: Sunday, Sept. 17 at Riverbend School. Tryout times are: age 10-under -- 1 p.m.; 12-under -- 2:30 p.m.; 14-under -- 4 p.m.; 16-under -- 5:30 p.m.; 18-under -- 5:30 p.m. Ages are as of July 31, 2001.
