Police on Monday identified the man who fatally shot himself Sunday evening on the roof of a Mendenhall Valley residence after officers arrived to serve a search warrant.
Blake Sanford, 21, climbed out a bedroom window to the roof shortly after officers arrived at about 5 p.m. Sunday, police reported. The incident occurred at a two-story building at 3212 Bresee Street.
Officers spoke to the man and attempted to get him to come down from the roof. The man pulled a pistol from under his clothing and shot himself in the head.
Sanford was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Lt. Walt Boman said the death is still being investigated. Because it remains open, he said he can't discuss it.
"This is an extremely sensitive case," he said.
Lt. Jerry A. Nankervis said he couldn't say what crime drew the warrant, or whether Sanford was the target of the investigation.
