I've been listening to the confirmation hearings for John Roberts. I've had a frisson of fear racing up and down my spine since they began.
This man is one of the most evasive people I have ever heard. He avoids politely. Nonetheless, he is very slippery. He has mastered the art of not answering questions, and after having looked at his history over the years, I think I know why. This is a man who has worked against women's rights, stating that gender discrimination is "perceived." He has stated that he believes that Roe v. Wade was "wrongly decided." He refuses to answer questions about his opinion of the 1964 civil rights act, about separation of church and state, about worker's rights, about whether people have a right to privacy, even in end of life issues.
The Bush administration has circumvented process and been deceptive and cagey. John Roberts seems to fit right in. I think I have a right to know how the prospective chief justice for the highest court in our land thinks. Since he's not willing to tell us, he is the wrong choice for this position.
