Dr. Alexander Tutunov will perform a piano concert this weekend featuring pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt and Prokofiev and will be held Saturday, Sept. 18 at Northern Light Church. It begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $25 for adults and $18 for students and seniors, and proceeds go to pay for repairs to the piano at the church.
The Alaska Music Trail piano, a historic Baldwin 9-foot concert grand now located at Northern Light Church, debuted on Oct. 19, 1950, after a local campaign to raise funds. Pianist Maxim Schapiro and cellist Luigi Silva gave the first concert at the 20th Century Theatre. That was also the first concert of the Alaska Music Trail, a touring concert series which spanned 20 years, stopping in 18 Alaskan communities and seven in Canada.
Tutunov, who leads piano master classes at UAS and teaches at Southern Oregon University, has offered to perform the concert without fee to help raise money to replace the hammers on the instrument.
