I join the rest of America in expressing my shock at the horrific attack of Sept. 11. It is beyond my comprehension that any person or group could have such complete and utter disregard for the value of human life. My heart and prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones in this disaster.
Like most Americans, I believe that those responsible should be vigorously pursued and brought to justice. However, during this past week, I have become concerned over the loud saber-rattling and talk of war from our political and military leaders.
Our pursuit of justice must not turn into a quest for vengeance. Talk of a speedy, eye-for-an-eye retaliation, with "acceptable" loss of innocent lives, and "justifiable assassination" only exhibits the same disregard for life that was displayed toward us. I pray that the greatness of this county will be measured by the immense courage, unity and faith with which people have responded to this crisis and not by the ferocity of our retaliation.
