ANCHORAGE - A man died after a pipe bomb exploded in his room at a motel and another was jailed after materials to make bombs were found in his apartment, Anchorage police said.

James Hargrave, 34, died Saturday morning after being taken to the Providence Alaska Medical Center, said police spokesman Ron McGee. "Hargrave said he shot himself because drug dealers were trying to kill him," McGee said. When police searched his room, however, they found a pipe bomb had exploded. No gun was found.

In the second incident, Daniel Stankewich was arrested Sunday after asking a member of his church to come counsel him because he was distraught over the New York terrorist attack.

A clergyman and a member of the church went to Stankewich's apartment on Core Court and were shown a bag containing what appeared to be bombs. Stankewich was charged with possession of explosives and a weapons violation.
