Empire's shirking its civic responsibility

Letter to the editor

Posted: Monday, September 18, 2006

I recently noticed that the Juneau Empire was no longer publishing the names of those arrested for driving under the influence, as well as the court report. I wrote a letter to the Empire and asked why, in which they replied it was a staffing issue.

Sound off on the important issues at

I feel the paper has a civic responsibility to publish the names of those arrested for DUI as well as the court report. The community has the right to know who is convicted and what kind of crimes they committed. The newspaper is the best source for this kind of information.

Having your name printed in the paper is a great deterrent to drunk driving, because it places an amount of shame to it. Some people will think twice about driving drunk if they know it will be made public if they are arrested. Without the names being published, it will just become a hidden crime against the community. Please live up to your civic duty and publish the names of those arrested for DUI as well as those convicted.
