Juneau resident Joseph Arthur Middleton died Sept. 17, 2008, in Juneau. He was 96.
Born to Arvid and Selma Johnson, he was taken in by the Middletons when he was a young boy and always recalled the kindness he received while in their care.
His family said he made and kept many friends throughout his life. In his last decade of life, he also was blessed with the special love and care of friends Donna and Walt Sheridan and more recently, but no less dearly, by Cynthia and David Hansen, they said.
A Juneau resident for approximately 15 years, he was a logger, bush pilot, commercial fisherman, mail boat operator and airplane mechanic. He was a veteran, who enlisted by lying about his age when he was either 16 or 17 back in 1928 or 1929, his family said.
He was preceded in death by both his real and adoptive parents; wife, Frances Middleton; and daughter, Dorothy Middleton; four brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his brother, Norman "Rusty" Johnson and wife, Irene, of Arlington, Wash.; sister, Margaret Brooks and husband, Earl, of Aventura, Fla.; nieces, Brenda Secor, Paula Nelson, Helen Anita-Kiely and Colleen Riedlinger, of Oregon and Washington; and surviving spouse, Gloria Middleton, of Juneau.
