Longtime Juneau resident Robert "Double O" or "Somebody" Williams died Sept. 13, 2008, at the Alaska Native Medical Center. He was 65.
Born Dec. 2, 1942, in Haines, his clan was T'ak dein taan and his Tlingit name was L'Dane. He was named after his grandfather, Henry Anderson.
He attended Sheldon Jackson High School/College, received a degree in engineering and continued to attend the University of Alaska Southeast. Robert surprised everyone by his drawings in Native arts.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and going fishing. He loved softball and played for Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 2, and also played basketball in Gold Medal, of which he was a longtime fan.
His family said he was "Double 0," Sealaska's secret weapon. He worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Tlingit and Haida Housing Authority, Sealaska and the Governor's Mansion. He also was a member of ANB, Sealaska, Goldbelt and the Tlingit and Haida Central Council.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Williams; parents, Dora Jack, of Hoonah, and George Williams Sr., of Haines; sisters, Janet Williams and Bonnie King; brothers, George Jr., Victor and Darryl Williams; nephew, Jason Skan; grandparents Andrew Jack, of Tenakee and Mary Houston, of Hoonah; grandparents, Charles, Harry and Louise Williams, of Haines; uncles, Charles Jack and many uncles and aunties of Haines and Hoonah.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Williams; children, Kimberly Velasco, Charlotte Rorem, Royal Hill, Grace Hawkins and Andrew "Andy," Harry, Cecelia and Ira Williams; brothers, Charles, Ernest, Darryl and Kenneth of Juneau, Joseph of Auburn, Wash., and Paul Williams, of Anchorage; sisters, Lorraine Shane, of Adak, and Trudy Skan, Loretta Wallin and Dorothy Zura, of Juneau; uncle, John Martin Sr.; aunts, Francis Marvin, of Juneau, Florence Bennett and Anita Lafferty, of Hoonah; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Pallbearers are Andy, Harry, and Ira Williams, Royal J. Hill, John "JJ" Hawkins, Thomas Jr. and "Bob" Beierly III, Duane and James Jr. Jack, Ben Wallin, Bob Zura, Mike and Jerry Lindoff, Larry Sweet Jr., and Showalter, Garvin and James Martin.
Honorary Pallbearers are James Jr. and George Lindoff, Larry Albecker, Leo and Joey Jacobs, Richard Young, Florence Beierly, Rick Harris, Alice Johnnie, Thomas Sr., James, Ernest, Fred and Charles Jack Jr., Mary Ann Wychkoff, Eric McDowell, Rosie Stevenson, Dottie Lindoff, John Howard, Frank Price, Stoney Hotch, Buddy Soriano, Kelly and Dwayne Wilson, Violet James, Roy Aceveda, Paul and Frank White, and Bill Martin. We also like to include Robert's friends of The Glory Hole.
