Posted: Sunday, September 19, 2010

ANCHORAGE - Federal Commerce Secretary Gary Locke has announced $5 million in federal disaster relief to help communities and fisheries recover from a commercial fishery failure in Alaska's Yukon River chinook salmon fishery.

Locke announced the funding Friday.

The Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission is to use the money to provide financial assistance to Yukon River salmon fishermen. It's also to be used to pay for replacing one type of fishing gear with another that allows for more adult female chinook to swim upriver and spawn.
