FAIRBANKS - Higher education leaders say more than half the entering freshmen at the University of Alaska need remedial classes.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported a legislative task force was told Friday that almost 54 percent of first-time freshmen need at least one special class in math, English or another subject.
The national average is only 34 percent.
The task force is reviewing plans for a scholarship program.
