City museum offers fall programs, art classes

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum will begin fall programming Oct. 7 with "1st Saturdays are Fun and Free." Activities on the first Saturday of each month will be free to the community through May of 2001.

Two events are scheduled Oct. 7. The first, from noon to 1:30 p.m. features project presentations by Juneau History Grant recipients. Video footage about World War II memories from Juneau's English- and Tlingit-speaking community will be presented by Kathy Kolkhorst Rudy and Harriet Roberts. The second event, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., is a "Chicken Ridge Chat." A viewing and discussion of a video featuring longtime Juneau resident John Doogan and Tlingit elder Cecilia Kunz will be featured, with grant recipients Kim Metcalfe-Helmar and V.M. "Mac" Metcalfe available for questions.

Also, monthly art classes will begin at the museum in October. Beginning Tlingit beading for youths and adults will be presented by Florence Sheakley Oct. 14 and 21. A class for youths 9 and older will be from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 14, with a cost of $12 per student plus material fees. An adult class for people 16 and older is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m., with a cost of $20 per student plus materials. Class sizes are limited.
