... for helping students

The special education staff of Mendenhall River Community School would like to thank the Elks Help organization for services rendered to the school district. Over the past few years this organization has made it possible for several students to borrow augmentative communication devices. These devices enable students with communication challenges to interact more effectively at home, school and in their community environments. The devices are prohibitively expensive and the Elks organization allows our families, students and the schools to explore various devices to determine the one that is most appropriate before making such critical purchases. The effort of the Elks to support individuals with special needs is greatly appreciated by all the families, students and staff of MRCS.

... for tourism services

As the cruise season winds to a close, I would like to thank each of the tour operators for their hard work and time spent in making this season a success in Juneau. Over the course of the summer, we heard and received many comments from our passengers recognizing the outstanding service and quality they received on their Juneau shore excursions. We consistently saw high ratings based on passenger comments and evaluations.

Congratulations Juneau! Princess passengers rated the Port of Juneau No. 1 among Alaskan ports. Only San Francisco and Victoria rated higher during the Alaska season.

Princess has been monitoring these evaluations through our Alaska Adventures Ashore C.R.U.I.S.E. program in order to award a Tour Guide of the Season and a Tour of the Season. In many cases, there was only a 1 percent rating difference between potential winners. With 33 different shore excursions that we offer in Juneau and hundreds of guides who came in contact with our passengers, it was impossible to pick only one of each.

The Shore Excursion for the Season Award was shared by "A Trip to Taku Lodge" operated by Taku Glacier Lodge and Wings of Alaska, "Helicopter Glacier Hike" operated by NorthStar Trekking, and "Wildlife Sightseeing Cruise" operated by Allen Marine. These tours consistently received high ratings and came out on top when polling the 18 different Shore Excursion team members on Princess ships. Each tour operator was recognized during a ceremony aboard the Sun Princess in Juneau and was presented with an award for their accomplishment.

The Tour Guide of the Season Award went to two highly recognized guides. They were Dave Frederick, a rafting guide from Alaska Travel Adventures, and Ben Lyman from Gastineau Guiding Company. Each guide was recognized in a ceremony aboard the Sun Princess as well. They are both local young men who grew up in Juneau and were accompanied onboard by their families.

Once again, I would like to recognize all of our tour operators and tour guides for an outstanding season. Each and every individual contributed to the high ratings we have achieved over the course of the summer. Thank you again for making Juneau such an enjoyable destination for our visitors.
