JUNEAU - The Juneau Public Libraries invites artists from preschool to 12th grade to show off their creative talents in the annual Children's Bookmark Contest.

The Friends of the Juneau Public Library, Hearthside Books and the city of Juneau Public Libraries sponsor this youth art event in celebration of children's love of books.

Entries will be accepted between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15 at any of the three Public Library branches (Juneau, Douglas and Mendenhall Valley).

The theme for this year s contest is: Make a Splash. The design must feature original work done in black pen or dark pencil on 4 ½-by-11-inch white paper, or half sheet of typing paper (folded lengthwise). Save the bottom two inches for artist s name, school, and grade. No coloring, copying, or familiar cartoon characters. Official contest entry forms and guidelines are available at any of the Juneau Public Libraries, or online at

Winners from each grade level will receive a $10 gift certificate from Hearthside Bookstore. All Winners and Honorable Mentions will receive laminated copies of their bookmark design and $5 gift certificates from The Friends of the Library Amazing Book Store. These designs will be displayed on the library Web page. Winning bookmark designs will be printed for use in the Public Libraries throughout the year. Printed bookmarks are a favorite souvenir of guests and tourists visiting Juneau. Last year s winners are currently on the city's home page under Juneau Libraries, Children s programs.

All entries will be displayed at the three public libraries throughout the month of November, where artists may pick theirs up if they choose.
