He was born Aug. 4, 1952, in Seward, to the late Rex and Ann Poe. He lived and worked in many Alaska communities, including Juneau, Sitka, Anchorage and King Cove, until he made his home and career in Fairbanks in 1983.
His family wrote: "After years of hard work and determination, he mastered the painting trade and became a self-employed general contractor in 1991. Robert was creative and ingenious and applied those attributes to everything he did. In addition to hunting in the fall and fishing in the summer, he loved to travel to warmer climates during the winter and took great pride in reintroducing his motorcycle to the pavement in the spring. He was fun-loving and outgoing and always the consummate storyteller. He was loved by his family and friends and will be missed very much."
He is survived by his four children, Laura Poe, of Juneau, Amber Poe, of Anchorage, Amy Poe, of Nevada City, Calif., and Ira Poe, of Fairbanks; three brothers, Rex Poe and his wife, Violet, of Adak, Mike Poe and his wife, Charlotte, of Anchorage, and Rick Poe and his wife, Toni, of Anchorage; best friend and sister, Merry Carney, of Boston; and only grandchild, Kaden-Dean, of Juneau.
A memorial service and potluck was held Sept. 9 at the Elks Lodge in Fairbanks.
