Midnight Suns Fastpitch Softball Organization tryouts - Tryouts for the 2004 girls fastpitch softball season take place Saturday through Monday, Sept. 20-22, at Riverbend Elementary School. On Saturday, age 10U meets at 9:30 a.m., age 12U meets at 11:30 a.m., age 14U meets at 1:30 p.m. and age 16/18U meet at 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, age 10U meets at noon, age 12U meets at 1:30 p.m., age 14U meets at 3 p.m. and age 16/18U meet at 4:30 p.m. On Monday, all age groups meet at 6 p.m. Info: Glen Alt, 586-1439.
Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation youth basketball participants and coaches - Due to lingering construction projects at some schools making it difficult to secure reliable gym times, the coaches' meetings have been moved to the week of Sept. 29 from the week of Sept. 22. Coaches will be notified by Sept. 24 if they are coaching a team. The season will start on Saturday, Oct. 4, as originally planned. Parents, if your children have not heard what team they'll be on by Thursday, Oct. 2, feel free to call the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation office after 3 p.m. on Oct. 2. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation youth basketball skills clinic - Young basketball players who registered for this clinic should meet on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Marie Drake Gym (this is a change from Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School). Ages 6-9 will meet from 1:15-2:15 p.m. and ages 10-18 will meet from 2:15-3:15 p.m. This clinic is for registered players only. Balls will be provided for the clinic, so do not bring your own. Juneau Adult Hockey Association off-ice officials training - Individuals who want to work as off-ice officials for evening games at Treadwell Arena need to attend a USA Hockey training session from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27. The session will provide an introduction to hockey rules, penalties and how to operate the scoreboard. Once certified, off-ice officials will be able to earn $10 per game working select games during the JAHA season. Juneau Billiard Association registration - Registration is open now for the 2003-04 season and continues through Sept. 25 for the Thursday 8-Ball League. The 8-Ball season runs from October through April. There will be a Monday 9-Ball League and a Saturday Women's 8-Ball League with registration at a later date. Registration will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18 and 25, at the Viking Lounge and at Marlintini's Lounge. Registration is $30, with those signing up after Sept. 25 paying a $5 late fee. Juneau Soccer Club annual general meeting - Meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School library. The FY04 budget will be presented to the members for approval and elections will be held for six board positions. Hunter education course - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is sponsoring this course Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3-4, at the Juneau Gun Club. This event was rescheduled from its original September dates. This course focuses on firearms safety, wildlife conservation and management, game laws and regulations, hunter ethics and responsibility. The class is recognized throughout North America for states requiring mandatory hunter education. It is required of anyone age 16-younger who plans to hunt waterfowl in the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge without adult supervision. The course meets from 5:45 to 9 p.m. on Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. All those interested in taking the course should pick up a packet of study materials from the Douglas office of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game by Tuesday, Sept. 30. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation 2003-04 Ordway League basketball team registration - Registration takes place at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Juneau Assembly Chambers downtown. Late registration takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation office at city hall. League play begins on Nov. 9 and runs through the first week of February. Team registration packets are available at the Parks and Rec office, Room 218 of the Municipal Building. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Women's Classic Basketball League registration - Registration forms are due by Friday, Oct. 24, for this less-competitive league for older women, or women with less time due to kids, work and other commitments. The women's division in the Ordway League (see above) is for highly competitive women. Preseason practices begin in November, followed by games once a week on Wednesdays through January. Teams play 10 games in the season. The cost is $47.25 per player (includes tax), which covers the player fee, a share of the team fee, plus use of a numbered jersey. Players register individually with the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation, and staff members or volunteers will put teams together. Mount Jumbo Gym preschool open gym - This Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation program is open from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 909 Fourth Street in Douglas for children ages 1-6 and their parents or caregivers. A ratio of four children to one adult must be met. Balls, mats, trikes, scooters, large building blocks, parachutes and a Little Tykes climber system will be available for use. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena will be open during Sept. 15-28 with a limited schedule. Public open skates take place from 12:15-1:45 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; from 3:30-5 p.m. on Mondays; from 4:30-6 p.m. on Wednesdays; from 7:45-9:15 p.m. on Fridays; from 2:15-3:45 p.m. and from 6:30-8 p.m. on Saturdays; and from 1:30-3 p.m. on Sundays. Youth open skates are from 3:30-5 p.m. on Fridays. Pond hockey is from 12:15-1:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rental times are from 11 a.m. to noon, 2-3 p.m. and 5:15-8:45 p.m. on Mondays; from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 2-8 p.m. on Tuesdays; from 8:30 a.m. to noon, 2-4:15 p.m. and 6:15-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays; from 8-10:15 a.m. and 2-8 p.m. on Thursdays; from 2-3 p.m., 5:15-7:30 p.m. and 9:30-10:30 p.m. on Fridays; from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m., 4-6 p.m. and 8:15-10:30 p.m. on Saturdays; and from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and 3:15-10:30 p.m. on Sundays. The rink is closed for ice maintence from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
