'Road gang' is a more appropriate name

I had to laugh when I read about the "road gang's" desperate plan to breathe life into the Juneau road extension (Sept. 10 Juneau Empire). Is there no one else who wants to see this road built but retired Department of Transportation engineers and their kin?

Sound off on the important issues at

If it wasn't for Gov. Frank Murkowski's irrational defense of the project, the 50-mile stretch of avalanche-prone, cliff-lined pavement would have died of its own weight long ago.

I can understand why the "road gang" is fighting so desperately to save the project. After all, the MacKinnon family, including Neil and his brother, DOT Deputy Commissioner John MacKinnon, stand to make big bucks if the state builds a road to their mining claims in Berners Bay. I also wanted to say that I don't like the name "citizens pro-road" nearly as much as "road gang"; somehow "road gang" does a much better job of conveying the group's bullying, Murkowski-esque tactics.

Unfortunately for the "road gang," I have confidence that Sarah Palin, Tony Knowles and Andrew Halcro will look at the quarter-billion-dollar road-shuttle scheme more skeptically. The emperor isn't wearing any clothes - he hasn't for the past four years - and everyone now knows it.
