Photo: Ghost barge

Posted: Friday, September 22, 2006

A U.S. Coast Guard detail from the cutter Maple boards an abandoned coal barge this month, about 60 miles southeast of the Kenai Peninsula. The 200-foot-long barge, with no markings to indicate a port or country of origin, was first spotted in May drifting 250 miles south of the Aleutian Islands. The only markings on the barge are "CTP 424," on the port and starboard sides, and a Russian-class society load line along the waterline. The barge is not listed in any available databases. There is no immediate danger from the drifting barge, according to the Coast Guard.
