FAIRBANKS - Two Borough Assembly members are facing off in the race to be the next mayor of the Denali Borough.

Bear Creek resident Jerry Mueller, the assembly's presiding officer, will run against David Talerico, who was elected to the assembly in November 2001. Talerico is from Healy.

Johnny Gonzales, the current mayor, is not seeking re-election.

Friday was the final day of filing for elective office in the borough, which includes the Parks Highway communities of Anderson, Healy and Cantwell. The borough's municipal election will be held on Nov. 5, the same day as the general election.

In addition to the mayor's office, five seats are up for grabs on the borough assembly, more than half of its nine-person membership.

Five seats are also open on the school board. No candidates filed for two of the seats. The remaining three seats have one candidate each.
