What ever happened to civil discourse?

Regardless of your opinion about Wal-Mart, mining, fluoride, cruise ships, the road out of Juneau, corruption in the Legislature, global warming, English grammar (particularly the use of the apostrophe), lethal force by police officers or the war in Iraq, please try to refrain from name-calling or invective.

Despite what you might see on television, hear on the radio, or read in the Letters to the Editor section, it is possible to express one's personal opinion and maintain a temperate tone. I usually stop reading a letter to the editor or an opinion piece at the first insult, even if I happen to agree with the writer. My mother used to say that you can catch a lot more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. I think she was right.
