I'm very pleased to be voting for Mark Begich for U.S. senator on Nov. 4. I've admired him since I met him about 15 years ago. I've looked forward to the day when he could grow beyond serving Anchorage as councilman and mayor to serving our state and our country.
As Americans, we can be called to serve in many ways, and I believe Begich's call is to be a public servant. He's a lifelong Alaskan who's smart, energetic and courageous. He listens openly, acts honestly, balances differing interests fairly and thinks creatively about long-term solutions.
Begich's opponent in this election, Ted Stevens, was a smart and pragmatic advocate for Alaska. But now Stevens' effectiveness as a senator is over, regardless the outcome of his corruption trial. We're very fortunate to have Begich ready and willing to be Alaska's new U.S. senator in Washington, D.C.
