JUNEAU - A Juneau man who became lost while hiking near Sheep Mountain was picked up by a TEMSCO helicopter Monday, after spending the night in the woods.
Alex Hildebrand, 31, called a friend Sunday evening to say he had become disoriented due to weather and oncoming darkness, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Juneau Mountain Rescue put together a search team and departed from the downtown tram area at about 2 a.m. Monday, but that search was abandoned two hours later due to snow, fog and darkness.
Hildebrand called on his cell phone later Monday and reported that he was OK, but unable to determine his location due to fog.
A TEMSCO helicopter and one member from JMR started another search at about 9:30 a.m. and located Hildebrand an hour and a half later. He was picked up and transported back to Juneau.
Hildebrand was in good shape, though a little cold and wet since he spent the night in light snow and rain, according to a troopers' report. Though not dressed for extreme cold weather, he had quality outdoor clothing that prevented him from becoming hypothermic.
