Nikiski fishermen mauled by bear at Swanson River

Posted: Thursday, September 23, 2010

SOLDOTNA - A fisherman from Nikiski who was mauled by an adult brown bear near the Swanson River is expected to survive.

Alaska State Troopers say 37-year-old William Pfendler was returning to his car from fishing Tuesday when he was charged near mile 40 of the Kenai Spur Highway.

He was able to drive himself to a Nikiski fire station. He was taken to Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna for treatment of bite wounds to his head, arms and legs. Troopers describe the wounds as non-life threatening.

Troopers searched the area around the Swanson River access but were unable to find the bear.
