Fairbanks cook sentenced for meat cleaver assault

Posted: Thursday, September 24, 2009

FAIRBANKS - A Fairbanks cook was given a 15-year prison sentence for attacking a fellow chef with a meat cleaver.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported 62-year-old Jong Lee pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in a deal with prosecutors who lowered an attempted murder charge.

Superior Court Judge Michael MacDonald said at the Sept. 21 hearing that he gave Lee the maximum sentence because of a past history of assaults.

The judge also ordered Lee to pay $2,400 in medical bills for the cook who was wounded in the September 2008 attack at Sophie Station.

After being fired from his job, Lee went to the back of the restaurant, grabbed a meat cleaver and struck the other cook in the head and arm.
