CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Sept. 25

• Learn to skate with the Juneau Skating Club. Session 1 begins Sept. 25, and classes meet once a week for six weeks. Group lessons meet either Friday nights from 6:30-7:30 p.m., or Saturday afternoons from 11:45-12:45 p.m. Hockey skills classes start Sept. 27 at 10:30 a.m. Register online or find more information at www.juneauskatingclub.org. Sept. 26

Region V Cross Country Meet - Juneau is hosting this year's Region V Cross Country Meet at Sandy Beach on Saturday. There is a community run at 10:30 a.m., followed by the small schools boys at 11:30, the large school boys at 12:15, the small school girls at 1, the large school girls at 1:45 and an awards ceremony at JDHS at 3 p.m. There is no charge for the community run, and all races are at the 5k distance.

Oct. 14

• Adult Ordway basketball team registration - Registration begins at 5 p.m. on Oct. 14 in the Assembly Chambers. Late registration will be Oct. 15-16 at the Parks and Recreation office from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. League play begins Nov. 8, and runs through the first week of February. ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Juneau Parks & Rec is in need of volunteer coaches for the upcoming indoor youth soccer season, which runs from Oct. 3-Dec. 5. If you have a positive attitude, enjoy soccer and working with youths, please consider volunteering. There is a need for coaches and assistants in many divisions. • Juneau Douglas Ice Association's youth hockey registration is currently ongoing. If you have not registered your child for this year's session, please go to usahockey/juneaudouglasice.com to register online. Practices start next week, so don't delay. • Taproot Yoga Center instructor Christin Gelinas is inviting everyone to join her yoga practices in the valley this fall. Students receive a discounted $10 drop-in rate for all classes with a valid student ID. Classes are Saturdays, 9-10:30 a.m. for hatha yoga, level one, and Thursdays, 12:30-1:30 p.m., all levels. • Adult Men's Basketball Division I team - Looking for players to help complete a team, the Positive Vibration, for winter season, which runs Oct. 31-Feb. 13. Please e-mail jojopicra@aol.com with "Men's Bball" in the subject line if you are interested. The player fee is $40. Also looking for local business sponsorships. The team is an Amateur Athletic Union (aausports.org) registered club, giving the team non-profit status. Only looking for players that want to combine competitive play with humility and compassion.

• Women's Classic Basketball League - Women who enjoy basketball and want to play for fun, on an organized team, but with women who are a "little older," or new to the game, or have less time due to kids, jobs or other commitments. Aggressive play is strongly discouraged in the Classic league. Pre-season practices will begin in November, followed by games which will be played through Feb. 3. Teams play once a week on Wednesday for a total of 10 games for the season. The cost is $47.25 per player, which covers the costs of the player fee and a share of the team fee, plus use of a numbered jersey for each player. Players will register with Juneau Parks and Recreation, and then staff and volunteers will put teams together. Registration forms and information are available at the Juneau Parks and Recreation office, which is located in room 218 of the Municipal Building. Classic registration forms are due by Oct. 23. • Jambaars Youth Soccer Academy - Sept. 2-Oct. 10. Wednesdays, from 6-7 p.m. for ages 5-10, and 7-8:15 p.m. for ages 11-15; and Saturdays from 12-1 p.m. for ages 5-10, and 1-2:15 p.m. for ages 11-15 at JDHS turf downtown. • The Juneau Youth Football League is looking for volunteers for a variety of tasks: Fundraising, field photographer, webmaster and more. If you can spare a little time and would like to help out the kids, call Scott Jensen at 209-4644.

• TMHS Cheerleader Babysitting Club - The Thunder Mountain cheerleaders are offering a babysitting service throughout the school year. Red Cross/CPR-trained cheerleaders will work for you in pairs for your babysitting needs. Please call coach Victoria Scharen at 209-1878 for details and to schedule your babysitters.

• Mt. Jumbo Gym Preschool Open Gym - Preschool open gym runs through April, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, in Douglas. Youths ages 1-6 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at a maximum ratio of 4:1. Play equipment, tumbling mats, tricycles, scooters and more are available. Please bring clean, dry shoes and a snack. There is a $1 fee per child, though adults are free with a paid child. Punch cards are available for purchase at the gym.
