Project would help power Kantishna

ANCHORAGE - Alaska's two senators have introduced legislation to construct a micro hydro project inside Denali National Park.

The project would help power the Kantishna area of the park - a non-wilderness area known for mining. It consists of a small weir on Eureka Creek, and will provide power to the Kantishna Roadhouse, a backcountry lodge owned by Doyon.

Sen. Mark Begich says the project makes sense because it will benefit the park by improving air quality and reducing truck traffic.

The bill directs the National Park Service to issue a special use permit for the project.
