A 9-year-old boy is in critical condition and undergoing an operation for a head injury at a Seattle hospital today after being struck by a pickup Sunday night.
A car operated by a boy, 16, was southbound on Mendenhall Loop Road about 8 p.m. when it turned left at Tongass Boulevard in front of an oncoming pickup truck driven by an 18-year-old man, police said. In the resulting collision, the pickup rolled over and landed on the 9-year-old boy, who was standing on the edge of Mendenhall Loop Road.
The boy was treated in the Bartlett Regional Hospital emergency room for a possible bruised spleen and an open fracture of the right arm, said hospital spokeswoman Marijo Toner. He left Bartlett at 11:45 p.m. and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, she said.
The boy was in Harborview's operating room this morning with a head injury and was being assessed for other injuries, said hospital spokeswoman Pam O'Brien.
The drivers were examined at Bartlett and released. A passenger, a 19-year-old man, was treated for whiplash at Bartlett and released, Toner said.
Police, who didn't reveal the names of the crash's participants, said they are continuing to investigate. But there was no indication alcohol was involved, police said.
