Title and firm: Jill Ramiel, president and co-owner of the Silverbow Inn, Silverbow Bakery, Silverbow Catering and The Back Room Restaurant and Cinema, all in the Messerschmidt Building downtown.
Services: Ramiel describes Silverbow Bakery as the only true bagel bakery in Alaska. The bakers boil the bagels before they bake them, the traditional way to make bagels but a technique not commonly used by most bagel retailers these days, she said. Ramiel said this makes the bagels chewy on the inside while maintaining a crispy outside.
"There's really no comparison to a real bagel," Ramiel said. "You get the great crust and the chewy middle. Everything we make is all natural and from scratch."
Ramiel said in addition to bagels, Silverbow is a full-service deli with soups, sandwiches and espresso operating from early morning to late afternoon seven days a week.
Adjacent to the bakery is The Back Room Restaurant and Cinema, which opened in 1999. The restaurant serves dinner and weekend breakfasts, Ramiel said. The restaurant also features movies Thursday and Saturday nights.
Ramiel said Silverbow Catering handles jobs from box lunches to full-course meals feeding up to 100 people. Additionally, the Silverbow Inn is a six-room hotel upstairs from the restaurant.
Quotable: "With five businesses and all the special events we do, there's always something happening," Ramiel said. "One great satisfaction is turning the old parking lot into what's becoming one of Juneau's great outdoor spaces."
Background: Ramiel was born in New York and attended the State University of New York at Binghamton. She then moved to Seattle where she earned her master's degree in architecture from the University of Washington.
Family: Ramiel is married to Silverbow co-owner Ken Alper, who is also from the East Coast. The two have been married since 1998 and Ramiel said, "we look forward to calling our kids native-born Alaskans."
