Mine permits before city panel

Click here to veiw the correction.

Juneau - Coeur Alaska is seeking an extension of its large mine permit to develop the Kensington gold mine, while Thunder Mountain Minerals has applied for a small mine permit for a placer operation.

The two issues will be discussed at the Juneau Planning Commission meeting at 7 tonight in assembly chambers.

The original Kensington permit, granted in November 1997, was renewed for 18 months in April 1999. The current permit expires Oct. 13. Two 18-month renewals are allowed according to the city land use code.

At Thunder Mountain Minerals, Howard and Michael Hayes have active mining claims encompassing about 70 acres on the Thane Road rock dump. The area is composed of old tailings deposited by the Alaska Juneau Gold Mine before World War II. Analyses of the tailings reveal significant concentrations of lead, zinc and gold.

Thunder Mountain proposes to operate the small mine 20 hours a day, six days a week, according to terms it litigated with surface owners Jacobsen Trust and A.J. Associates. The claims will be mined by Golden Placer, LLC of Juneau.

The city Department of Community Development will recommend the planning commission grant both requested permits.

Fifth person dies from plane crash injuries
