Take three today for ACS vs. Sitka football game

The Sitka Wolves and Anchorage Christian Schools Lions are hoping the third time's a charm for their oft-postponed football game.

After two weather delays, their Greatland Conference game will finally take place at 1 p.m. this afternoon in Sitka.

"It's overcast, but it's not raining," said Sitka player Matt Mangini, whose father Mark is Sitka's head coach. "It should be a fun game. They came all this way just to play some football."

The game was originally supposed to be played on Saturday afternoon, but the Lions weren't able to get to Sitka. Their flight left Anchorage at 8 p.m. Friday night, but overflew Sitka twice because of fog. After refueling in Ketchikan, the plane again overflew Sitka and returned to Anchorage about 2 a.m. Saturday.

The game was then rescheduled for Monday afternoon, but weather again prevented ACS from getting to Sitka. Some of ACS's coaches and about a dozen players were able to get into Juneau Sunday night, but fog kept them from making their way to Sitka until Monday morning.

The rest of the team was stuck in Anchorage on Sunday and wasn't able to get into Sitka until 5:30 p.m. Monday, when it was too dark to start the game since Sitka's field has no lights. A heavy ground fog in Sitka kept that half of the team grounded in Juneau for five hours Monday.

The entire ACS team is now in Sitka, so there should be no further weather delays.
