It's the law

I am a fifth-grader at Auke Bay Elementary School and I am concerned about garbage bears.

I am bothered by people leaving their garbage out a day or two, or even a week before garbage pickup. Most of these bears are habituated so people don't concern them. The problem with habituated bears is that they walk right through people's yards, smell garbage, then become garbage bears. The problem can happen anywhere, but it is mainly from the Mendenhall Valley to downtown Juneau because of all the Dumpsters.

I would like us to do something about it by replacing all the Dumpsters with bear-resistant ones. I would also like us to put out our garbage cans on the morning of garbage pickup day.

Please put your garbage cans out as close to garbage pickup time as possible. As they say on the radio, "It's not only a good idea, it's the law."
