One of the greatest things a school learning community can experience is the active participation of its parents. It affects the school at every level, including the support and care that students feel, a teacher's feeling that parents support their heartfelt energy, and the principal's need to have high levels of parent involvement.
Sean O'Brien, who is running for School Board, was one of those parents. He was highly involved in his children's schools both at Glacier Valley and Riverbend while I was principal at both of those schools. He then moved on to Floyd Dryden to get involved in their site council. Whether it was bagging goodies for the school Halloween carnival, cooking hamburgers at the open house barbecue, or most importantly, his consistent involvement as a member of the site council, Sean was there to support the school. The greatest skill that Sean brought to every site council meeting was his leadership and ability to facilitate different points of view on a variety of issues.
I know Sean's involvement as a School Board member would bring the same level of dedication and reasoned approach to issues that he brought to Glacier Valley and Riverbend. A vote for Sean would bring all of those leadership qualities including his honesty and integrity to the Juneau School Board.
