JUNEAU - The Alaska State Firefighters Association will hold a fire drill downtown today at the cruise ship docks.
Residents and visitors can expect to see firefighters unfurl hoses and spray water onto a cruise ship, hear loudspeaker announcements and see ambulances near the docks.
The Millennium, a Celebrity Cruises vessel, will be used for the drill.
The drill is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and last until about 5 p.m.
The scenario, put as a challenge to teams of firefighters from around the state, is that a helicopter, while hoisting a patient from a ship three hours south of Juneau, experiences a mechanical failure and crashes into the ship.
Those involved in the drill will practice planning, operations, search and rescue, victim removal, fire boundaries and establishing a water supply.
The event is part of the statewide conference, being held in Juneau for the first time since the 1980s. The conference runs through Saturday, when a firefighter competition will take place from noon to 5 p.m. at the Centennial Hall parking lot.
