Graduations, honors and enlistments

Airman 1st Class James M. Spreter graduated Sept. 7 from Special Operations Tactical Air Communications Personnel School at Hurlburt Field Air Base, Fla. Prior to technical school he graduated in May from Air Force Basic Training in San Antonio Texas. Spreter will be stationed at Fort Drum Base in upstate New York. Spreter, a resident of Juneau, is a graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School.

Samuel Edwards, son of Capt. and Mrs. Norman Edwards of Juneau, graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He received his commission from his father as President Clinton shook his hand. Edwards is assigned to the CGC Bear out of Portsmouth, Va. Also, Elan Edwards Eddington, the elder Edwards' daughter, graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities.

Billie-June Marie Tonsgard, 12, will participate in dance and modeling at the World Championships for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles in October.

Christopher Bishop, a Juneau resident, graduated from the Alaska Military Youth Academy ChalleNGe course. The facility, the only military high school in Alaska, consists of a 5 1/2-month ChalleNGe program, followed by a 12-month after-care program. Ninety-one students were part of this year's initial program.
