Pledge allegiance to the U.S. flag

Posted: Wednesday, September 27, 2000

I was very disturbed to receive the news that the Juneau School Board made the decision to make pledging allegiance to the United States flag optional! To what flag do the Juneau School Board and the children in their district pledge allegiance: China's, Iran's, Russia's, Cuba's?

To become a U.S. citizen, the INS requires all immigrants to pledge allegiance to the U.S. and our flag in English. Basically, the Juneau School Board is telling our children they can live in this country and receive all the benefits it has to offer as the freest country in the world but they don't have to demonstrate allegiance. In time of war, to what country can we count on the members of the Juneau School Board and the children of their district pledging allegiance, the U.S. or the enemy? And, whether they like it or not, this country was founded under God! If anyone wants it to be founded under Allah, let them go to Iran. If anyone wants it to be founded under Buddha, let them go to China. If anyone wants to live in this country, let them pledge allegiance to it, God and all. And then, let them freely worship as they wish.
