Third time's a charm as Sitka blitzes ACS

Posted: Wednesday, September 27, 2000

It was worth the wait for the Sitka High School football team.

After two postponements because of weather, the Wolves finally got their Greatland Conference game in with the Anchorage Christian Schools Lions, claiming a 46-8 victory Tuesday afternoon at Lower Moeller Field in Sitka.

Heavy fog prevented the game from being played when it was originally scheduled on Saturday, as the plane with the Lions couldn't land Friday night after twice overflying Sitka. The teams were going to try again Monday afternoon, but ACS still couldn't get its entire team to Sitka until it was too late Monday to start the game. Sitka's field has no lights, and it was already getting dark Monday when ACS arrived.

But once it started, the game was worth it for the Wolves.

Matt Mangini scored four touchdowns, including two on passes from quarterback Travis Bradshaw, to lead the Wolves, who finished their first high school regular season with a 2-2 Greatland Conference record, 4-2 overall.

Dennis Houston also scored a touchdown and added two two-point conversion runs for Sitka. Jason Marrs also found the end zone, while Sitka's defense recorded a safety and kicker Elgin Hollins kicked a 29-yard field goal.

The Wolves took an 8-0 lead on a 4-yard run by Houston, followed by a conversion run from Houston. Sitka made it 29-0 at halftime as Mangini scored three of his touchdowns. Mangini caught a 71-yard pass from Bradshaw, made a 30-yard touchdown run, then caught a 29-yard pass from Bradshaw just before halftime.

The second half saw Mangini break loose with an 80-yard return for a touchdown of the opening kick-off, making the score 35-0. ACS finally got on the board midway through the third quarter when Richard Stafford scored on a 1-yard run, with a conversion from Kirby Marden. But Sitka answered about a minute later when Marrs scored on an 8-yard run. Sitka picked up the safety and the field goal in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.

Patrick Bennett rushed for a game-high 151 yards to lead ACS, which completed its first year back at the high school level since the mid-1980s. The Lions fell to 0-4 in conference and 2-5 overall.
