Road plan only extends a dead end

My name is Devin Baxter. I am a senior at Juneau-Douglas High School and a JDHS Student Council representative to the mayor's task force. I am a senior member of my school's Postponing Sexual Involvement health group, and I support improving our state's inter-community ferry system above the proposed road "out of Juneau."

Sound off on the important issues at

First of all, I happen to know that the proposed plan does not include connecting Juneau to the outside world by road. The actual plan that currently has the most support at the Department of Transportation includes extending the existing (dead-end) road and building a new ferry terminal at the new end point, some 20 to 50 miles away from where it ends now. I know this, because at the end of last year, I created a survey for my sociology class, in which I asked people if they knew what the road plan included. Most people interviewed seemed to think that the plan included a connected, continuous public roadway to Skagway.

I could also talk at length about the enormous estimated cost (and estimates almost never are less than the actual price) to the taxpayers and to the pristine wilderness and wildlife that inhabits that area. But an intelligent and informed public servant, such as Sarah Palin, could probably teach me about those facts. So, please make the most sensible and economically sound choice, and support our tried and true ferry system.

Devin Baxter
