Former Juneau resident Gerald Daniel Patrick Cashen died Sept. 18, 2007, with his children at his side at his daughter Colleen's home on Camano Island, Wash. He was 88.

He was born April 25, 1919, in Douglas. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska. He attended Pacific Lutheran University and received a degree in elementary education in 1955. He taught in the Clover Park School District until his retirement in 1981.
He married Marian Nicholson in 1950, and is now reunited with the love of his life who preceded him in death in 1986. He is survived by his children, Colleen Lienau and her husband, Paul, Gerald Daniel Cashen II and his wife, Karla, Sara Shumaker and her husband, Mark; grandson, Brian Claar and his wife, Melissa, and their son due in February 2008; granddaughter, Marisa Shumaker; brothers, John Cashen and Frank Cashen and his wife, Irene; and a large extended family.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Fir Lane Memorial Park in Spanaway, Wash. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady Queen Of Heaven Catholic Church in Spanaway. In appreciation for the wonderful, compassionate care he received, family members said memorials may be sent to Skagit Hospice, P.O. Box 1376, Mt. Vernon, WA 98273.
