Sheakleys shake things up

One out of three Sheakleys won their bouts when family members from Angoon took Roughhouse boxing at Marlintini's by sheer numbers.

Ben Sheakley, 23, was knocked down by his brother early in Round 1 after he delivered several combination body shots.

Uriah Sheakley, 24, answered with an energized pummeling. Referee Joe Isturis issued Ben Sheakley a standing eight count after he was knocked down, but he came alive, returning the standing eight count.

Round 2 was even, with both boxers tiring at the bell, but Ben Sheakley came up with the win. Despite losing, Uriah told his brother after the fight, "it was fun."

Sitka's Selina Slack, 26, improved her record to 4-1-0 with a win over Angoon's Jessica Sheakely in the only female bout of the night. Slack had never seen Sheakely before the fight, but she dominated the rounds, earning a technical knockout over her opponent.

Jessica Sheakely took some hard head shots in Round 1, but managed to get Slack in the ropes. In Round 2, Slack delivered a standing eight count to a shaken Jessica Sheakley. By the end of round two, the fight was over.

In the main event, Toni Talamali, 24, the 2009 Southeast Showdown heavyweight champion defeated roughhouse fixture Al "Mean Machine" Valentine, 47.

Talamali said before the fight, "I've worked out a little here and there, my strategy is to go after him."

Round 1 went to Talamali, who was the aggressor. Valentine, who planned on testing him out and seeing his strength, said in a pre-fight interview that he was a little concerned at how fit Talamali looked. Talamali, an aspiring boxer, packed some lead in his blows and earned the win.

Brian Lauth, 19, of Juneau, brought his record to 3-2-0 with his win over Ketchikan's Shaun Guthrie, 28, now 4-3-0, who was the 2009 Southeast Showdown middleweight champion. Lauth had the reach on Guthrie, which was key to his win.

At the end of Round 1, Lauth dropped Guthrie, but Guthrie answered by pouring it on in the second, getting Lauth in a corner, though Lauth boxed his way out. Lauth clearly earned the third round, landing a couple hard shots to the head that dazed Guthrie, who collapsed in the center of the ring after the final bell rang.

First-time fighter from Bulgaria, Martin Sashov, 21, defeated Juneau's Tyler Papasodora, 19, in a split decision that brought Papdodora's record to 0-4-0.

Sashov heard an inspiring radio announcement looking for boxers while working with fish at the Taku Smokeries. He had a lot of experience fighting in the streets and clubs of Bulgaria with his twin brother, so he decided to give it a try.

"You go to a club in Bulgaria and you are drinking, sometimes things end up in a fight, you know. It's normal," he said.

Shasov earned the win by landing more punches, but Papasodora poured it on early in the third and was the aggressor. However, it was too late.

In a heavyweight fight, Ronald Wheat, 41, weighing 230 pounds, defeated 215-pound Anthony Barril, 54, in a fight that was even in Round 1. But early in Round 2, Barril found himself flat on his back. Barril was issued a standing eight count, but Wheat was gassed at the bell. Round 3 was uneventful, with both boxers sucking air until Wheat collapsed at the bell, still earning the decision.

Heavyweight first-time fighter Dillon West, 21, of Gold Creek Child Development, challenged, and then defeated fellow first-time fighter and Breeze-In employee Sean Prebeg, 21, in the only MMA fight of the night.

West got Prebeg on the ground in Round 1, and Prebeg got West in a hold. Isturis quickly broke it up. Both boxers tired in Round 2, barely throwing jabs as the crowd booed. A mother in the crowd yelled, "My kids fight better than you." West earned the win by ultimately landing more punches.
