Eddie Hurtte defeated Nathan Foskett 6-3, 7-6 to win the boys' singles bracket, and Marlena Sloss came out on top in the girls' bracket Sunday in the Region V Tennis Championships after topping Emma Good 6-3, 6-1.
Matt Vandor survived with a 4-6, 6-4, 12-10 win over Micah Jones to take the boys' consolation bracket, and Dorothy Brent took the girls' bracket with an 8-6 victory over Rebekah Badilla.
The doubles pair of Foskett and Alex Campbell edged Vandor and Evan Carnahan to take the boys' doubles bracket 6-4, 6-7, 10-4, and Sloss and Cassidy Davenport downed Good and Badilla in a close 7-5, 5-7, 10-2 match to win the girls' doubles crown.
James Holzenberg and Mitchell Cabrigas cruised past Jones and McLean Cannon with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the boys' doubles consolation bracket, and the duo of Sammy Alex and Sage Davenport defeated Brent and Haila Schultz 8-3 to win the girls' bracket.
Jade Pilcher won the beginner singles bracket with an 8-3 victory over Melissa Skan, and the duo of Skan and Lana Swanson won the beginners doubles bracket.
Coach Amy Skilbread said it was great to see all the close matches and it was exciting for everyone.
"The team is playing very tough doubles and mixed doubles, and we had some strong showings in the singles matches," she said. "It seems like they're ready for State."
The mixed-doubles championship match will be tonight at 8 p.m. between the team of Campbell and Cassidy Davenport versus Foskett and Sloss.
JDHS will head to Anchorage on October 8-9 for the state tennis championships.
