Farmer out of mayor's race

Posted: Thursday, September 28, 2000

Mark Farmer withdrew from the Juneau mayor's race today and threw his support to candidate Sally Smith.

"We've been negotiating for a couple of days," Farmer said just after noon today. "I'm going to ask all my supporters to go with Sally Smith."

He said he would give a full explanation of his reasons at a later time.

Also running for mayor in Tuesday's election are former mayor Jamie Parsons and marketing consultant Patty Zimmerman.

Farmer, a photojournalist, has run for city office six previous times. He withdrew from his last race for Juneau Assembly to throw his support to Frankie Pillifant, who went on to win the District 1 seat.

In an interview earlier this month, Farmer said he thought the time had come to change the city's form of government from one run by a manager to the "strong mayor" form. "Managers manage," he said. "They are not leaders."

Farmer also said that though he had withdrawn his candidacy in favor of another candidate in the past, this time he was in it "to the victory."
