I would like to thank the Juneau Empire for taking a stand in defense of the public interest in its editorial of Sept. 19 on the proposed Cape Fox land exchange bill. As many before me have stated so eloquently in numerous forums, and as the Empire reiterated, this bill is most certainly not in the best interest of the public.
So many of us here in Juneau treasure the wildlife and wildlands of Berners Bay, and the recreational opportunities that abound in the bay. All of these things would be threatened by a bill that would trade away approximately 12,000 acres of pristine public lands in our backyard for 3,000 acres of mostly clearcut lands many miles away.
It seems that Sen. Murkowski has forgotten who it is she represents - not corporations and private interests who stand to benefit financially from such a land exchange, but rather you and me, the public, for whom this bill is nothing but a raw deal.
